It is amazing to me how far we have evolved in the technology world in such a relatively short time. Nothing surprises me anymore, the wow factor is almost extinct as it would truly take something amazing, like a UFO landing or a low calorie chicken wing, to make me say wow.
The phenomenon known as the internet is a wow and part of that is Facebook. I wonder how my life as a teenager would have differed if FB had been available then. I'm sure one or more of my close friends would have gotten into trouble by posting picture that were not meant for prime time and while we would have gotten a laugh I'm sure the authorities eould have frowned on the locker room humor !!
This brings me to what I consider the good points. Reconnecting with old friends, co workers, teammates and even strangers is priceless.
Reconnecting has allowed me to let old friends know what has been going on in my life and compare events in our lives. The ability to leave a question in a safe place until one of my contacts can take the time to answer or dismiss it at their whim I can say things that might ordinarily go unsaid , thoughts that are from the heart but somehow are easier said in the two dimension world of electronic text
The electronic social media of today allows us to think back on simpler times when we come upon classmates pictures of proms attended, or not. Old flames that we wonder why it didn't work out, was it my fault ? Probably was. The pain of reliving our teen years, winning shots and close loss's to county rivals in the big game. The pleasure of nice words from opponents and sportswriters that puts a smile on your face even as you think could I have been better. A friend request from a opposing coach , my own coach, classmates you rarely spoke too
This craze we all social media has in my opinion, many more plus's than minus's when used the way it was meant Just this week I had a friend that had to work late and was missing a big game coached by another friend. I kept him updated to the score via text so he could enjoy the game as best he could
I received a precious email from a classmate who stated she had tears in her eyes after reading one of my blogs. I told her if I had it to do over again I would like to take the time to get to know her so much better , not romantically but as a person, as a human being. These thoughts would have never taken place without social media
I friend anyone that requests it as long as it is legitemet. I have had some requests from unsavory folks that I have denied. I have only knowingly not friended one person and that was after contacting them and explaining why
In closing, this phenomenon we all social media has brought me many more happy connections than sad. I hope to continue to meet new friends while adding to the list f old friends that have somehow touched my life
Sincerely,
Mike
